a Slovakian name meaning fairy princess; this shoe is inspired by the Brothers Grimm fairytale of the twelve dancing princesses. In the tale there was a king who had twelve beautiful daughters. They slept together in one great room, in twelve beds all in a row, and every evening the king locked them in. And yet every morning their shoes were worn out, as if they had danced all night. Secretly, every night they dressed in their splendid gowns for a ball. And their splendid gowns required elaborate and ornate shoes to dance in.
I took an enlarged photograph of this shoe to be alongside me when I took part in Anthony Gormley’s One and Other 100 days on the fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in 2009.
